Welcome to Ballinspittle NS portfolio of science.

We have included a variety of activities from Ballinspittle NS, displaying our pupils’ involvement in Science.

Our Green School Committee

Taking Pride in Ballinspittle's Local Natural Resources with Streamscape.

Here our 3rd class pupils are looking at Friction and how their cars went faster on wood than on carpet!

Here is a Nature Trail we did with Senior Infants

Volcanoes

We had great fun making volanoes with salt and dough. Afterwards we painted them.
Procedure for Volcano Making
  • 10 ml of dish soap
  • 100 ml of cold water
  • 400 ml of white vinegar
  • Food coloring
  • Baking soda slurry (fill a cup about ½ with baking soda, then fill the rest of the way with water)
  1. Combine the vinegar, water, dish soap and 2 drops of food coloring into the empty soda bottle.
  2. Use a spoon to mix the baking soda slurry until it is all a liquid.
  3. Eruption time! … Pour the baking soda slurry into the soda bottle quickly and step back!
A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda creates a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the same type of gas used to make the carbonation in sodas. What happens if you shake up a soda? The gas gets very excited and tries to spread out. There is not enough room in the bottle for the gas to spread out so it leaves through the opening very quickly, causing an eruption!

Spooky Halloween Light and Shadows in Junior Infants

Junior lnfants noticed and enjoyed the special effect made by the sun shining on our Hallowe'en decorations and showing their shadows on the window blinds.

Capillary Action with Juniors

This experiment involves placing a celery stalk into water with food colouring in it. After a short while the stalk and leaves shows change of colour as the food colouring moves through the veins of the plant, as would water and minerals in normal course of events.

Rainbow Skittle with Junior Infants

This experiment shows that sugar dissolves when warm water is added to it. It also demonstrates colours mixing to create new colours.

Ramps and Investigation of Friction on Different Surfaces

Mixing Materials to Create Halloween Slime

Investigating the best materials to use for building a house for a hamster

We worked out how we could reinforce our houses to make them stronger so they couldn't be blown down. We based our thinking on the story of The 3 Little Pigs and which type of house the wolf could not blow down.
