Discovering Our Local Village Stream
In June 2018 Stephanie O’Toole from Streamscape of Heritage in Schools came for a day to show 4th, 5th & 6th the wonders of our village stream. The emphasis of Stephanie's visit was on promoting an understanding of the life-cycle of plants and animals and the dependence of each part of the cycle on each other. Local water-cycles, food-webs and Salmon life-cycles were discussed and investigated through questions and answers, games and visits to the local stream. Here, the children were given an opportunity to identify local plants and animals. They were also introduced to simple techniques to identify the water purity of the stream and to methods for conserving water.
We found the following bugs in our stream; True Worms, Whirlygig Beetle, Water Boatman, Cased Caddis Fly, Mayfly nymph; & Stone Fly nymph.
Stephanie also gave us the videos below to help our understanding of biodiversity, effects of climate change and the life cycle of certain insects.
She also gave us a book about Streamscapes work which has a lot of interesting information about our streams. Please go to this link for more information.
